Arthritis occurs when the cartilage protecting the joints degrades over time. This happens when joint homeostasis is ruptured in favor of catabolic processes that are activated by oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS). High levels of oxidative stress and ROS are found in patients with osteoarthritis. Oxidative stress not only degrades the cell membrane, but it can also change the body’s protein structure by accumulating more damaged proteins in the tissue. 1 There are several ways to decrease the effects of oxidative stress: by reducing your exposure to oxidizing properties, by increasing levels of endogenous and exogenous antioxidants, or by stabilizing the cell’s mitochondrial energy production and efficiency. 2
